Pre-production samples

Here are some samples- (Click on the pic for a bigger image)

First the mosquito, with hackle tail, and with a moose tail. The moose tail gives a fuller body and rides a little higher/better in rough water.

Oops - I forgot about the white hair wing version. It does have better visibility.

Here are three woolly buggers.

An olive size 2 Long, with olive head, copper rib, and some pearl flash in the tail.
This is a black with purple body size 2 XX Long. It has a red rib, red flash in the bushier-style tail, fuller body hackle feathers, and a red flash wing and a red head.

This is a black size 2 XXLong, with a red flash in the bushier-style tail, red rib, and a red flash beard.

Here are the three buggers with a ruler. Note the black ones are longer, but they are all on the same size hook- a size 2. The space between the point and the body is about 1 centimetre.

I think this is a serviceable size for pike and lake trout, but still easy to cast, and larger grayling and rainbows can certainly handle it.

You can pick from these, or any combination of these or any other colours I have in stock, for:
Tails
Bodies
Hackles and
Flash

I tied these on size 2 hooks as it was mentioned "pike but not too huge" , but I can tie pretty much anything- just say bigger or smaller, imagine a colour, add shiny bits; what ever works.
(Note- these all work.)

First fish of 2019 and March fish reports

So that was fun.

I went down to the river with the indomitable V. It was another incredible day of mild weather, about 7 or 8 down by the river. Environment says today's average high and low are 1.5° and -10.0°C.  (Update: the maximum and minimum temperatures were 9.9° and -4.0°C.)

We fished for a couple of hours after work, and I got a small grayling on a guide's choice hare's ear.

V went to the blue bridge at Marsh Lake yesterday, she said there is still a bit of ice on the Whitehorse side but it was easy enough to walk on/into the water and you can fish there! There weren't actually any fish anywhere, but we're sure that it's just a matter of weeks (or days). The shallows of Marsh Lake were pretty ice-filled and the rest-stop side looked like a no-go, but she didn't actually drive over to check in detail.

Please feel to post any trip reports in the comments. I would suggest not being too specific about locations unless it's about a very popular stocked lake, or one of those "everybody goes there already" places.

Aaannnnndddd.... we're back.

It's been a while.

Went to Carcross today with V, taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather we've been having. It clouded over and got windy but was probably 6 or 7 degrees.

We left Whitehorse about 1, and fished till shortly after 6 (with a break for a Black Forest Latte).

Flies? Didn't really matter. The water was gin clear but there wasn't a fish to be seen.

April 2017 trip reports

Hi,

Here are some April trip reports.

Please feel free to add yours in the comments.

Welcome.

This blog will be showcasing my flies- and perhaps some from my friends- and talking about fishing, mostly in the Yukon or where Yukoners go. I hope to put up some fishing reports and reviews, and anything else I feel like posting.

Comments are invited, especially on the fishing reports posts. But please be respectful: don't burn exact locations, be kind to each other, and don't post uninvited commercial messages.

So pull up a chair and grab a coffee. Hey, I just saw something rise over there...
